Maharashtra formally recognises women farmers regardless of land ownership [Commentary]

Maharashtra’s Women Farmer’s Empowerment Act 2026 is a powerful example of what can happen when political will and a clear understanding of why empowering women matters, writes the author of this commentary.

Country diary: A young shieldbug has found a safe place to hide – or so it hopes

Looking across a swathe of golden oat grass to the Apple House, it seems almost inconceivable that the M25 and M1 motorways are just beyond the treeline.

Each sphere is a fanfare of tiny trumpets, their flared funnels marked with brown stripes.

While the adults invite attention with their black and white striped antennae and connexivum (edge of the abdomen), and reddish-brown forewing bases and pronotum (a hardened plate covering the front of the body), the young bugs’ markings shield them from sight.

Challengers Approach: Third Party App Stores Arrive to Google Play

If you are an Android user, you may have noticed it already: Google has begun allowing rival, third-party app stores to be distributed through the Google Play Store.

Specifically at issue were Google's restrictions on the distribution of alternate app stores through the Play Store, restrictions on app developers who have little practical choice but to distribute their apps through the Play Store, and Google’s rules governing in-app payments and the fees associated with them.

The forgetful CPU (Linux on M4)

For now, m1n1 didn’t start the secondary cores because smp_start_offset was missing (an offset hardcoded in m1n1; without it, smp_init is skipped).

This work has so far uncovered and addressed a fundamental issue with running Linux on the M4 and later Apple Silicon chips, allowing Linux to boot to a shell with all cores usable (the same WFI workarounds have been found to work on M4 Pro, M4 Max and M5 chips!).

Science begins for Smile

This follows a busy in-space commissioning period since the spacecraft launched on 19 May and reached its target orbit for science operations on 20 June.

Each instrument will collect vital information to help us better understand solar storms, geomagnetic storms, and the science of space weather.

Smile will give us data on how solar activity interacts with Earth's magnetic field, leads to the auroras and can affect electronic infrastructure on and around Earth.

No Distinction Between 'Honourable' & Other Acquittals For Service Benefits: Rajasthan High Court Orders...

The Rajasthan High Court has held that there is no legally sustainable difference between 'honourable acquittal' and 'acquittal' for the purpose of granting service benefits to a suspended employee.

The Court observed that the Life Insurance Corporation of India (Staff) Rules, 1960 (the “Rules”) did not make any distinction between the honourable acquittal and acquittal for any other reason, and in any event, the presumption of innocence of the employee stood restored upon his acquittal.

What makes Lisp difficult to read?

The Lisp family of programming languages is infamous for their parenthesis-heavy syntax.

Many people, myself included, find this syntax more difficult to read than the notation of languages like Python, Java or C.

The perceived unreadability of Lisp is significant enough that multiple attempts have been made to create new notations to aid Lisp’s adoption.

Court Agrees with EFF: Utah’s VPN Law Demands a Technical Impossibility

In a win for digital rights, a federal judge has issued a preliminary injunction blocking Utah’s SB 73, the state’s draconian anti-VPN age verification law.

SB 73 burdens the rights of all internet users outside of Utah because it requires adult websites to either know every visiting user’s physical location, and then block those in Utah, or to verify every visitor’s age just in case they might be in Utah.

According to the notice, the proposed rules could be effective as soon as October 8, 2026.

Mere Demand Of Exorbitant Amount As Settlement To Withdraw Litigation Not "Extortion": Bombay High Court

The Bombay High Court has held that merely demanding an exorbitant or disproportionate amount during settlement talks does not by itself attract Section 385 of the Indian Penal Code or constitute an offence of extortion.

The Court explained that Section 383 IPC requires intentionally putting a person in fear of injury and dishonestly inducing that person to deliver property or valuable security, while Section 385 concerns putting or attempting to put a person in fear of injury in order to commit extortion.
